The Walking Climate in Oregon
While walking around Portland, I have noticed cars parked right up to the edge of intersections. State Law forbids parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, yet this law is rarely observed in Oregon. Another law many drivers do not know about is ‘Every Corner is a Crosswalk’, meaning that every crossing is a legal crosswalk, even if it is not striped.
I believe focusing on the...

Apologies for the Twitter Takeover
Over the past 6 months, I have been leveraging Twitter rather than this Tumblr blog for sharing documentation of livable streets issues in Portland and around the globe. The content was feeling stale here so I though integrating twitter automatically would be the answer.
It’s not, sorry about that. I’ll be removing this today. Stay tuned for a new multimedia site at...
Ooh boy! New @PortlandAfoot issue is here. Not a subscriber? You should be! http://ow.ly/2UCbI #pdxmedia
“Measure 26-119 would simply replace an existing TriMet bond that’s expiring.” why don’t we hear that from trimet? nice work, @alex_craghead

67 applicants to the BAC! Hope that provides some new diversity and energy to the committee.
As of today, the only funding measure I’m going to support is the Oregon Historic Society.
I support increased funding for Trimet, but this ballot measure wreaks of poor strategic planning, lack of stakeholder engagement, etc, etc
Interesting reading about the Paparazzi using bicycles and the subway to get the jump on celebs in NYC. http://ow.ly/2Swwk
I hope we either see Adams take a strong, visionary role in this now, or we find a new candidate who is not afraid to do something great.
It’s a tale of two cities, two different densities. If we want to be a truly walkable, bikeable town, we have to muster strength to LEAD.
NYC leadership gets it, and it’s not without political costs. The difference here is that we haven’t put forward a clear message on our BMP
There’s no question advocacy can improve, but we need motivated, resilient, decisive leadership in city hall. No more backpedaling in PDX!
Our engineers are ready to innovate, but we’re still walking on eggshells about bikeway projects. This is 2010, lets start acting like it!
New 33rd & Going cycletrack includes a soft diverter, forbidding auto entry from 33rd. Nicely done, PBOT! @mayorsamadams #nicesurprise
I’ve been researching the history of MLK, a commercial street where ODOT saw fit to remove parking. read new gateway plan http://ow.ly/2QN4p
MLK is an example of how removing parking can really kill business if not done well. Now, the city is working on restoring onstreet parking.
But the planting strip (not to mention high traffic speeds) has really acted as a divider between neighborhoods. MLK used to be pacific hwy.
I’d really like to verify the history of the MLK urban renewal that took away spots. Shows there is will to remove parking, the Q is WHY?
PBOT director on “bikes vs. sewers”: “one of the most hamhanded kind of information campaigns we could have come up with” RT @PortlandAfoot
A colleague of mine told me the planting strip in the middle and removal of parking was to cut down on prostitution-related crime #evidence?
MMR!
Working on a belated Parking day video… should be up soon!
This #trimet bond measure seems ill-conceived. We missed an opportunity for a strategic, local, multi-modal transportation & jobs measure.

One of the holdups is Trimet - they don’t want to drive their buses in the center lanes. That’s ok, many ideas to mitigate that.
To clarify on the Hawth bridge comment, I just meant that we could reduce auto traffic to 2 lanes to make space, just like the Steel bridge.
I wonder with one lane temp closed on the Hawthorne, if we can see/recognize the potential of taking a dedicated lane for bike traffic asap.
A call for greater investment in SF’s parklets (at least they have some!) comes off sounding a bit snooty to me. http://ow.ly/2MKXg
I hate walking on the Hawthorne, and it’s congested because we still give up 4 lanes to cars. Let’s take them back, just like the Steel.
PBOT really shines when it comes to bike parking. I love being asked where I’d like the racks to go. Sonja & Sarah are bike superheroes!

My thoughts on the bike boulevard sharrows and our poor bikeway connections: http://ow.ly/2N8mM Hoping to get a response from PBOT on this.
Lots of great folks sitting on both committees, but they are not setup to be proactive and I wonder how they might hold us back.
I’ve been pondering applying to the BAC, PAC.. but my hunch is I can be more effective outside of the city-selected groups.
It’s the same concern with larger non-profits, they hold up and use the system that oppresses those who they serve. At what cost?

The Trouble with Cycle Tracks, NYC →
I’d like to see the city give a 20 minute press conference about what bikeways mean for the future of this city. EXPLAIN IT to people.
Recent Tribune article repeats the sewer money for bike lanes line. Where is the leadership in city hall to stand up for investing in bikes?
