Superb graphic outlining danger hot spots when vehicles and bicycles share the road too closely.

In the top photo, the driver has a responsibility to look for cyclists before opening the driver-side door.  The cyclist can also ride defensively by staying out of the ‘door zone’ by taking the lane.

Taking the lane can also prevent unsafe passing, usually cars hugging the edge of the lane in which the cyclist rides.

Both danger zones can lead to serious injury or death for the cyclist.

Going forward, bike infrastructure should be built to protect cyclists from both dooring and unsafe passing.
